Hockey vs. Racing

- March 24th, 2011

If there could be two sports considered Canadian national sports, in my opinion they would be racing and ice hockey. The Canadian fans at any of either sports event are the best in the world!

As a young boy growing up in Canada I took hockey into my heart at an early age. There was a small outdoor rink around the corner from my family home and on many occasions, my Mom would have to come and drag me off the ice for dinner.

I was playing hockey a few times a week and my little league team even won a few championships. But as I grew up I realized that my speed on the ice wasn’t enough to counter my lack of height and stature, so I focused on my other true passion of racing, where my speed was a definite advantage. I never really had to make a choice between the two sports as I naturally gravitated to racing; it’s a family affair and it’s in my blood. But that being said, I do enjoy watching hockey; and it is in my Canadian heritage, after all.

You can then imagine my excitement when I was invited to a Tampa Bay Lightning game to do some PR for the St Petersburg race prior to the recent Indy car test in Sebring. My duties for that night included going on the ice before the game and addressing the crowd.

I got to say the famous words “Let’s play hockey” right before the start of the game. Amazingly I knew there were a lot of Canadian fans in the crowd, especially from Quebec as I could hear them chanting from the stands.

Many people were on Spring break in Florida during that time and I had a chance to meet a lot of them at the show car, out in front of the stadium for the event.

Bill Wicket, Executive VP of Communications for the Tampa Bay Lightning took great care of me and invited me to the suite to watch the game. After the game I went down to talk with Simon Gagne and Vinnie Lecavalier and extended an invitation to them for the St Pete’s Indycar race.

I am excited for this first race of 2011 and I’m expecting a great weekend in Florida. After my duties at the track on Friday, I will be going to visit my friends Vinnie and Simon as they battle it out with Carolina in a home game (they go to North Carolina for a game Saturday night).

Also, the Indy car league and the St Petersburg race executives, mainly Tim Ramsberger, decided to take my invitation a step farther and appointed Vinnie Grand Marshall of my first race on Sunday. He’ll also get a two-seater ride prior to the green flag.
