Alex hosts a tour of his home away from home

The lifestyle of a professional racecar driver is often likened to that of a touring rock star. We travel away from our homes for a good portion of the year; we perform at various locations all over the world; we have loads of screaming fans wherever we go; and, we live in motor homes while on tour.

Exchange the hard rocker parties for serious hard training and it’s not a poor comparison.

The schedule of an Indycar driver is busy (to say the least), but time at the track becomes way more fun when you are living in a motor home and when I can have a coach, I choose to live in a Featherlite.

There are many reasons why I like to stay overnight at the track and I know Bronte has her reasons too. First, it’s

practical to have a coach for entertaining guests and sponsors on the long hot summer days so common of our race weekends. It’s also perfect for me to relax and refresh between on-track sessions in the heat.

If you know us, you know we are very particular about what we eat; so living in a coach enables me to eat the way I do at home. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can all be prepared just the way that I like it and there’s nothing better than my wife’s cooking! … apart from my Mom’s, that is …

What I personally like about Featherlite as a company is that its President, Jimmy Adams, loves that he can provide a unique experience for his clients. For those with discerning tastes, there is a division that totally customizes coaches. Featherlite does take the notion of “camping” out of this kind of lifestyle.

At the first race in St Petersburg, we were lucky enough to be at the track with a Featherlite coach and there is a possibility we’ll have it customized with some new high-tech product thanks to our sponsor Bowers and Wilkins.

I have seen custom work in coaches before, but never like what I have seen recently by Featherlite. To be honest, I felt like I was living in a high-end home, with the rich wood and granite flooring, and exquisite decoration of the living space, the bathroom and the bedroom. The amount of space in the coach with the slide outs was as big as some of our old apartments!

Another thing worthy of a mention is that Featherlite uses Prevost bus shells for construction, and that’s close to my heart since it’s a company from Montreal.

We are on the road to Alabama, followed by Long Beach but it’s the Indy 500 I’m really excited about. We will have a coach at the speedway all month and there is definitely something special about waking up in the quiet still of dawn at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
